Dynamite's LOOKING FOR GROUP #6 - Variant cover

October will see the release of a variant cover I did for Dynamite comic's 'Looking for Group' written by my former Gutters' writer and all around good dude, Ryan Sohmer.

The alternate covers in the series are based on famous paintings, amd I was tasked with Salvador Dali's Persistence of Memory.

LOOKING FOR GROUP #6

Cover: Gibson Quarter
Writer: Ryan Sohmer
Art: Lar deSouza, Hawk, Ryan Dunlavey, Ed Ryzowski

After the events of last issue, Cale is excited to begin building something instead of destroying. An old friend joins the team as a new quest presents itself, but where is Richard? It’s the Trial of The Century as Richard must answer for his past and free himself from the ever-deadly “Plane of Suck!”

Look for it in a few weeks!

Art Blast April - Wolverine and the Eiffel Tower from Gutters

Art blast April rolls along here again! I've cracked open the vault (a.k.a. recently found an old hard drive I'd misplaced) to bring recent viewers and twitter folks some of MY favorite pieces of art that I've done over the years.

Today we have the infamous 'Eiffel Tower' strip for the Gutters, written by Ryan Sohmer.

I went a bit extra cartoony on this -given the content- and it went over quite well. Ryan once told me it was the best selling print they had at Gutters, so that's pretty cool.

2014 - Year end round up!

I love doing these yearly round ups. It keeps me organized and gives me an idea on my over-all output in one easy place...the first blog post of every January. ;-)

In reflecting on 2014 and doing some fact checking on the pages I drew, here's what went down:

2 trade paperbacks...a first for me!
(Heroes of the North - Compendium and Legacies)

4 comics published this year.
( The Undertow #4, The Undertow Free Comic book day special, Professor Elemental #3 , and the Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel #3. )

2+1/2  pages of the Gutters.
( All can be found here, and the 'half' page that almost was is here )

1 art book - from the 2014 Calgary Expo Show

2 new prints, and 1 pin up in Monstrosity #2

Add to that my trip to Seattle's ECCC, and a  few Canadian Conventions and there you have it.

My goal now is to make 2015 my most prolific yet,  and I'm working on that as we speak. I've got many pages 'in the can' that I'll show and talk about closer to the dates when the books are set to come out. You can read about here or by following me on twitter.

A big THANK YOU to all those who have helped and supported me this year. There are too many important people to list individually, but you know who you are.

Happy 2015 to all.

2 artists, 1 script! Gutters with different layouts

Gutters with Ryan Sohmer and crew, is a hilarious, time sensitive editorial cartoon lampooning the comic book industry and the heroes and characters that dwell within.  I've done a number of strips for them, and count myself as one of their semi-regular contributors.

My cool and affable editor Jeff Moss asked me to draw Gutters # 559 last week and I agreed to do it. I knew I'd be up north at a cottage and unable to access the internet, but during the time away I planned to get all the pencils done. I'd then ink it up on Sunday night when I got back. This way I hit my deadline and the colorist and letterer would have Monday to work their magic.

I got the script and sent an email to confirm I was all set and would be away - just before I drove out of range on Friday.  Unfortunately... my confirmation email got blocked by the spam filters at Gutters HQ. Poor Jeff sent a few emails over the weekend asking if I got it, and was everything OK?  None of these I saw until I got back into cell range on Sunday afternoon. Since this is a time sensitive strip, and he needs to get a page out there on schedule, Jeff's last email on Sunday morning was a "sorry, but since we haven't heard from you, I have to give it to another artist so it'll be done by Tuesday."

While this sucked for me, I completely understand. Editors are ALWAYS concerned about artists flaking out and leaving them to pick up the pieces. Artists being hard to reach near deadlines is like Kryptonite for editors.

Why am I telling you all of this? It's the story of how the art below is now an 'unpublished' Gutters #559 page from me. It's pencils only, as there is no point in inking it now!   ;-)

I put it up here for those hardcore comic art (and comic scripting!) fans who like to see how different artists might interpret the same script.  Since the script isn't mine to show, I cant post it here without permission...but if you compare the dialogue and read it carefully, you'll get an idea of what we were asked to draw.

Compare my pencils below to the final PUBLISHED page right here.

I hope you find this as interesting as I do, Rob Dumo made some interesting artistic choices that are different than mine, but just as valid. Not only that...he made a great page to boot!

Oh, and since Jeff is such a cool guy, you'll be seeing me in the Gutters again very soon...stay tuned to my twitter, this blog, or just book mark the gutters main page!

The Gutters #490 ...with Joss Whedon

I've drawn up another Gutters strip for the fine folks at Blind Ferret.
Gutters is a series of standalone pages that parody the comic book industry and the heroes and characters that dwell within. Think of it as an editorial cartoon targeting comic books, and you'll be on the right track. Gutters is written by Ryan Sohmer, has Ed Ryzowski as the colorist, and uses rotating artists.

I really like working with these guys, and I'm up to a grand total of 5 strips now...can a limited 'GQ' Gutters edition with a hydrofoil cover be far off?

Please click on over and give Gutters #490 some love!

Ghost Rider - Gutters 455

I've drawn up another Gutters over here:

Gutters is a series of standalone pages that parody the comic book industry and the heroes and characters that dwell within. Think of it as an editorial cartoon targeting comic books, and you'll be on the right track. Gutters is written by Ryan Sohmer, has Ed Ryzowski as colorist.

I really like working with these guys, and I'm up to a grand total of 4 strips now...including the infamous 'Effiel tower' gay Wolverine Strip. (Which Sohmer has told me is one of their best selling prints...that cracks me up!)  You can check them all out here.

Please click on over and give Gutters #455 a big thumbs up!  ;-)
